Salt Water Fish Care
Have you just bought yourself a fish tank with beautiful rainbow colored fishes swimming all over? Watching fishes swim around peacefully can be a therapeutic experience. But at some point you will have to stop watching and feed those fish. Feeding fish can be a little trickier than feeding the rest of your pets. The first thing that you will have to determine is if you have bought salt water or fresh water fishes. Each have their own dietary needs. To begin with you’ll have to make provision for oxygen and the right type of water. Once that is done, make sure that you don’t put predator and prey together in the same tank unless you want to see a few fishes go missing every morning Different types of fish food are easily available in most pet care shops. However, ideally your fish food should contain not more than 10% fat and 30 % protein. So when buying dry fish food you will have to check the ingredients. Feeding your fish live, frozen or fresh food is also an option. If your fishes are carnivores you can feed them organ meat, worms or dry food. For herbivorous fishes you can use spinach, lettuce or other leafy vegetables fresh food or dry food. All you have to do is put the food in the water and your fishes will merrily circle it and gobble it up. Over feeding is a big problem encountered by most new fish owners. In fishes over feeding can be fatal. If you think they will stop eating on their own when they’ve had their fill, they won’t. Besides, the residual food will pollute the water causing respiratory and skin problems in your fishes. A good thumb rule is 2 to 5 minutes of feeding. Your fish shouldn’t take more than 2 to 5 minutes to consume just the right amount of food. So the next time you feed your fishes try to see the amount of time it takes them to finish the food. If its less than two minutes you are not feeding them enough and more than 5 minutes would mean you are over feeding them. If you have fishes that like to dwell at the bottom of the tank it’s important that you give them food that will sink to the bottom. Fishes can only eat when their food is accessible to them. So make sure that your fishes can easily reach their food. Also if you have plant eating fishes, use faux plants instead of real ones to decorate your tank A new innovation in fish feeding is the automatic feeder. This can only be used with artificial dry food. It regulates the quantity of food and the time of feeding. So even if you are not around you can make sure that your fishes will be fed on time. Very few things in the world are as tranquil and beautiful as a school of fishes swimming about, enjoy it and give your fish the best care possible.
