Pet Treatment Advice

Owning a dog is not just about providing him with food and shelter. There is so much more that needs to be done to ensure a healthy and happy life for your pet. One doggie year is equal to seven human years, that’s not a lot of time. So try to make each day and each moment a healthy and happy moment for your dog. Dog care can be divided into four categories.

Health Care:

You need to take your dog for a complete medical checkup at least once a year and once in six months once your dog crosses the seven year threshold.

The medical examinations should also include a dental check up. If your dog has a plaque or tartar problem you should go for prompt treatment to avoid further complications.

Older dogs may need additional nutritional supplements to keep them in top shape.

Regular deworming is very important for your dog’s health. Heart worm, a fatal and distressful disease is usually contracted in the mosquito breeding season. Get more information on this disease from your vet or from pet care books. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heartworm immediate treatment will be the only way to save him.

Regular Care:

Daily exercise is a must for all dogs regardless of their breed. A sedentary lifestyle may cause health issues such as obesity and heart problems in your dog.

You will need to bathe your pet once at least once a fortnight. Maintaining good hygiene will prevent skin problems.

A healthy diet is very important for your pet. Always check the pet foods that you are buying for your dog. Consult a vet if necessary to find out about your dog’s specific dietary needs.

Obedience:

When your dog is a few weeks old you can start obedience training. Some commands such as stop, sit, fetch, and lie down are very important. Early training has a positive effect on a dog’s temperament and well being. However always use training methodology that uses positive reinforcement.

Attention:

More than anything else your dog needs your love, care and attention. Dogs are remarkably sensitive animals. So even a small casual gesture, like shooing them away every time they come close to you will have a profound effect on tem.

The right way is to designate a certain amount of time each day for your dog. Enjoy his company let him enjoy your company. You can take your dog for a walk, play with him, pet him, or practice the various commands that he has learnt.

Dogs are not solitary animals and they hate to be confined to a place all alone. When left all alone at home they get bored and start chewing on that sofa or on those shoes. So if you are a busy person, you can use doggie day care services or appoint a pet walker.

Your dog needs his own sanctum in your house. Of course he is going to love getting in your bed with you. But keep a designated place for your pet in your house. This should be his corner and should have his bed, toys and a bowl of water.

Finally buy a dog tag for your pet which has your address and name on it. This will ensure the safe return of your dog incase he gets lost. You can also insert a tiny microchip which will help you to determine the exact location of your dog if he gets lost.

Your dog is your best friend and will be your most faithful companion, so make sure you give him the best.
