Unlike dogs cats are self sufficient and self reliant. They don’t crave our attention all the time and usually leave you alone and like to be left alone. But that certainly doesn’t make owning a pet cat any less pleasurable than owning a dog. As a matter of fact they are the most popular pets around the world because of their easy and non fussy pet care routine. However they still need your tender loving care. Every now and then you cat will purr at the thought of you scratching its chin or petting its head right behind the ears.

Cats are remarkably intelligent animals and don’t have to be taken to answer natures calls. What you could do is make a litter box for your cat. The litter box should be kept at one fixed location because your cat will get used to going there every time it wants to do its job. If you have a fairly large multi storey house, it would be a good thing to have more than one litter box. Keeping the litter box clean is not only hygienic but also very important for your pet. In order to do so, you can scoop the waste and flush it each day. Change the soiled contents each week, wash the litter box and refill.

Your cat will normally love to share your bed with you. And there is no harm in that if its been declawed. Otherwise you may want to get your beloved pet a sleeping basket. You can buy an expensive one at the pet store or make your own by putting a nice soft warm blanket in a normal large cane basket. Remember to change the cloth that you’ve used at least once every 2 or 3 days.

Cats don’t like to be picked by the scruff of the neck. It’s equivalent to picking a human baby by its legs. So don’t do it. Instead be gentle with your little fur ball. Place one hand below the front legs on the chest and one hand to support the rear legs and gently pick up your cat. A cat wagging its tail is not a sign of excitement but irritation. So if you are a first time cat owner try to study your pet’s temperament. Some cats like to be cuddled other don’t and may scratch.

By nature, cats are predatory animals. So any toy that involves chasing, pouncing, jumping and capturing will be appreciated by your cat. Try to buy a toy that moves and jumps to simulate a living prey. You could also make do with a ball of wool. Cats love to play with wool strings. Catnip is another favorite. It’s available at almost all pet stores and gives your cat an instant feeling of joy, your cat will love this one.

Hygiene is important to cats and its not unusual to see a cat licking and cleaning it self for hours each day. Body odor is certainly not a problem for them. So you may not have to bathe them as often as a dog. But when you do be extra careful because cats are instinctively afraid of water and may react in a hostile way out of fear.

Cats make wonderful companions and it’s a known fact that having a pet can significantly lower blood pressure and other tension related problems. So enjoy your pets company.
